Snaptober Day 16. Prompt: Classic
Originally, I thought I'd share some classic headshots or family portraits, the kind of photography you might immediately picture when you think of a photographer. But since I based this challenge around a book theme, I started thinking about classic literature.
And what came to mind? Alice in Wonderland, of course!
Alice in Wonderland has been one of my favorite stories since I was little. What could be more magical than Wonderland? As a fantasy photographer based in Arizona, creating a Wonderland-inspired photoshoot felt like the perfect way to interpret this prompt.
But instead of simply recreating Alice's adventures, I wanted to tell a different story.
What If the Queen of Hearts Was Once Like Alice?
The idea behind this photoshoot was to imagine the Queen of Hearts before she became the ruler we know from Wonderland. What if she was once a young girl, just like Alice, who stumbled into Wonderland herself?
Before the madness, before the temper tantrums, and before shouting, “Off with their heads!” there was a girl discovering a strange and magical world for the first time.
I love taking familiar characters and imagining what their stories might have looked like beyond what we already know. Fantasy photography gives us the opportunity to explore alternate stories, reimagine beloved characters, and create something that feels like it belongs in a fairytale.
We photographed this Alice in Wonderland-inspired concept at the Mesa Community College Rose Garden in Mesa, Arizona, using the location as the setting for our own little piece of Wonderland.
