Snaptober Day 18. Prompt: Trilogy.
When I first saw today's Snaptober prompt, Trilogy, I had to think for a minute about which photoshoot would be the perfect fit. My first thought was to organize a Hunger Games-inspired photoshoot, but then my fiancé asked me a very important question: How could I possibly choose a trilogy without doing something inspired by The Lord of the Rings? And honestly, how could I not?
So, of course, I put out a model call for a Hobbit-inspired fantasy photoshoot! Sometimes the best creative ideas come from a little inspiration, a conversation, and being willing to see where an idea takes you.
Bringing a Little Middle-earth to Arizona
For this photoshoot, I wanted to capture the cozy, whimsical feeling of the world of hobbits. When I think of hobbits, I imagine gardens, nature, handmade clothing, and a slower, simpler kind of life. I wanted the setting and styling to help bring that fantasy feeling to life.
We photographed this session at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, one of my favorite places for photoshoots. With its beautiful plant life and winding garden spaces, it felt like a wonderful setting for a little Middle-earth-inspired magic. What could be more hobbit-like than spending time in a garden?
I love finding locations in Arizona that can help transport us into another world. You don't always need an elaborate set to create something imaginative. Sometimes, the right location, a thoughtful outfit, and a creative idea are enough to get the imagination going.
A Handmade Outfit and a Creative Collaboration
My model for this session was Kat (@kscrews), who is also a talented fiber artist. One of my favorite details about this photoshoot is that Kat made her own bodice and skirts!
I love when creative people bring their own talents and ideas to a photoshoot. Handmade wardrobe pieces add such a personal touch, and knowing that Kat created her own outfit makes this session even more special.
Creative photography is often a collaboration between the photographer and the person in front of the camera. It's an opportunity to bring different ideas, skills, and artistic perspectives together to create something unique. When everyone contributes a little piece of their creativity, the final images become something we couldn't have made quite the same way on our own.
That's one of the things I love most about fantasy photography. It's not just about taking a portrait; it's about building a concept together and bringing a little piece of an imagined world into reality.
A Birthday Photoshoot Worth Celebrating
This session was also a birthday photoshoot for Kat! And if you've been thinking about celebrating your birthday with a fun, creative photoshoot, consider this your sign.
Your birthday doesn't have to be celebrated in just one way. You can use it as an excuse to dress up, try something new, step into a character, or finally bring that photoshoot idea you've been dreaming about to life.
Maybe you've always wanted to feel like a character from your favorite fantasy series. Maybe you're drawn to whimsical portraits, elaborate costumes, or a setting that feels like it's straight out of a storybook. Or maybe you simply want a set of photographs that celebrate you and your personality.
Whatever your inspiration, a birthday photoshoot can be a wonderful way to create something memorable. You don't need to wait for a special occasion, either. If you have an idea you've been wanting to explore, that's reason enough to plan a session!
