Snaptober Day 19. Prompt: Role Reversal.
Sometimes photography is about capturing a beautiful outfit. Other times, it's about capturing the ideas, stories, and messages woven into the clothing itself.
For today's Snaptober prompt, Role Reversal, I photographed a runway show by @lovell.fashion. The entire collection explored the idea of reversing traditional roles, using fashion to challenge expectations around gender, strength, vulnerability, and who gets to be protected.
The collection featured six pieces, each representing a different character: the princess, the general, the saint, the seraph, the damsel, and the knight. Together, they created a visual story that invited the audience to rethink the roles we so often take for granted.
The Princess, the General, the Saint, the Seraph, the Damsel, and the Knight
In order of appearance, the collection moved through six distinct characters: the princess, the general, the saint, the seraph, the damsel, and the knight.
These familiar archetypes carry their own expectations. We often imagine the knight as the protector and the damsel as the one who needs saving. The general is associated with authority and strength, while the princess is frequently placed in the role of someone who needs defending. But what happens when we turn those expectations around?
What if the person who is usually expected to be strong is allowed to be vulnerable? What if the person traditionally cast as the damsel becomes the protector? What if we stop assuming that someone's role is determined by their gender?
That was the heart of this collection. Each piece contributed to a larger conversation about how we understand strength, softness, and the roles people are expected to play.
Photographing the Winter 2026 Collection
This runway show was part of @lovell.fashion's Winter 2026 collection.
Photographing a runway collection means capturing more than a sequence of outfits. Each look has its own details, movement, and personality, and the challenge is to preserve those elements while documenting the overall vision of the show.
For this collection, the six characters helped create a clear narrative around the theme of role reversal. The photographs offer a way to revisit those looks and reflect on the ideas behind them long after the runway has ended.
I'm grateful for opportunities to photograph creative work that has something to say. Whether it's an elaborate fantasy costume, an alternative fashion design, or a runway collection challenging traditional expectations, I love working with artists who bring their ideas to life in their own unique ways.
