The Lovers
March 2025 | 12 x 9 inches | Mixed media on recycled wood. Glass beads, vintage paper dolls, and red cellophane.
I created The Lovers as part of my ongoing Major Arcana Series, a collection of 22 mixed media works that reinterpret the Tarot through a feminine and sustainable lens. Each piece in this series is built on reclaimed wood, layered with upcycled materials and memory. This one took me about 25 hours, and in that time I found myself reflecting deeply on what love, devotion, and faith mean when seen outside traditional narrative.
In traditional tarot, The Lovers card depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, watched over by an angel, a story so rooted in divine duality and expectiation. I wanted to create my own version of that garden, one that centers on queer love and feminine power. The two figures I used are Victorian women, holding hands beneath a gothic, deep red stained glass window. They stand together in a symbolic Garden of Eden of their own making, one not defined by sin or shame, but by acceptance, devotion, and choice.
This piece reflects themes of connection, love, relationship, choice, and alignment with one’s true values.
